T3-2X2 Veiling Luminance Control
The purpose of this optical system was to achieve a distribution suitable for large inter-post distances while maintaining the BUG parameters, average illuminance, and uniformity requirements specified by RP-8, without exceeding the established veil luminance thresholds
Features
- Extended pole-spacing
- Uniformity / No-hotspot
- Veiling Luminance Comply
Challenges
The primary challenge of this optical system was to maintain the required veil luminance criteria for extended pole-spacing while ensuring that uplight and glare levels remained unaffected
Solution
The solution involved creating a design framework that consistently maintained uniformity of illuminance on the pavement while minimizing uplight and glare. The resulting distribution was highly uniform, with a gradual decrease in illuminance from directly beneath the luminaire to the sides, thereby ensuring the average uniformity values met the required standards. This approach effectively reduced glare, enabling the necessary contrasts to sustain the veil luminance at the specified levels, all while achieving a pole-spacing distance exceeding 300 feet and average illuminances greater than 1.5 foot-candles
