  • Light Control

Challenges

The primary challenge was to design a geometry that mitigates the formation of hotspots beneath the luminaires. Currently, lenses utilizing a 5050mm LED within a maximum 1-inch optics size produce elevated illuminance directly below the luminaire, adversely affecting average luminance values. Furthermore, commercial lenses that address hotspot formation often do so at the expense of increased backlight or introduce stray light within the optics, resulting in elevated Backlight-Uplight-Glare (BUG) values

Solution

The solution for achieving effective light control, despite the large source size, was based on the Optical system’s Etendue. The approach integrated optimization criteria and design variables, analyzing the source’s luminance and the minimum light path within the acrylic. This allowed to develop a functional model that not only met performance goals but also minimized the material’s thickness.
